At Inspired Life and Wellness The Retreat New Forest, I use acupuncture, cupping, tui na and gua sha to support a wide range of physical and emotional concerns. Many people come for help with pain, tension, stress, sleep issues and low mood, but treatments are also used to support recovery, hormonal balance, digestive discomfort and general wellbeing.
Whether you are visiting The Retreat for a short stay or you live locally and come for regular sessions, the FAQs below explains how treatments work and how to book.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Acupuncture and how does it work?

Acupuncture uses very fine, single‑use needles placed gently into specific points on the body to help ease pain, tension, stress and sleep issues. It works by encouraging your body’s natural healing and regulating your nervous system, so you feel calmer, lighter and more in balance.

Does Acupuncture hurt?

Most people feel very little; the needles are much finer than an injection needle. You might feel a brief tap, warmth, dull ache or tingling, but sharp pain is unusual. If anything feels uncomfortable, just let me know and I’ll adjust or remove that needle.

Who can benefit from your treatments?

Many people come for help with:

  • Back pain, sciatica, neck and shoulder tension

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Stress, anxiety and low mood

  • Poor sleep or trouble switching off

  • Stiffness, limited movement or general “body feels stuck”

If you are unsure whether treatment is right for you (for example, due to a medical condition or pregnancy), we can discuss this first on the free phone consultation.

What happens in my first session?

I always start with a short chat about how you’re feeling, your main concerns, and any medical history that’s relevant. Then you’ll lie or sit comfortably while I give you an acupuncture, cupping, tui na or gua sha treatment as agreed. Most first sessions last about 60–90 minutes and include time to check in afterwards and offer simple self‑care tips.

How long are follow‑up sessions?

Follow‑up treatments are usually 45 minutes to 90 minutes, depending on what you need that day. We can keep things shorter if you’re mainly maintaining how you feel, or a bit longer if there’s a flare‑up of pain or tension.

I’ve never had Acupuncture—what should I expect?

  • You’ll stay fully clothed and only expose the area being treated.

  • You’ll lie or sit on a treatment couch in a calm, quiet room.

  • Needles are very thin and most people feel relaxed; some even nod off.

  • After treatment you may feel a bit spaced out or very calm; it’s best to take it easy and drink water.

Are the treatments safe?

Yes—if you see a properly trained practitioner. I am fully licensed, use only sterile, single‑use needles, and follow clear safety and hygiene guidelines. I also check your medical history and any medications so everything is tailored to you.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on how long you’ve had the problem and how your body responds. Some people feel better after just 1–2 visits; others with long‑term pain or stress may need 4–8 sessions to build sustained change. After the first 1–2 appointments I can usually give you a clearer idea of what’s realistic for you.

What is cupping and what does it feel like?

Cupping uses soft silicone or glass cups placed on the skin to gently lift the underlying tissue. It helps release tight muscles, ease stiffness and improve circulation. It often feels like a deep pull or suction; it can leave temporary marks that fade within a few days.

What is tui na and is it painful?

Tui na is a deep therapeutic Chinese massage that works into the muscles and soft tissue. It is often used for longer‑term relief from tension, stiffness and movement restriction.

What is gua sha and will it hurt my skin?

Gua sha uses a smooth tool to gently scrape the skin along muscle lines, helping to ease stiffness, improve mobility and reduce tension. It can leave light red or pink marks that fade within a few days and are a normal part of the treatment. It should feel like a firm massage, not a burn.

What should I wear?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing if possible. You’ll usually stay mostly clothed and only expose the area being treated, so you feel warm and comfortable throughout.

Can I claim through private health insurance?

Many private medical policies in the UK offer some cover for acupuncture or bodywork, especially for pain‑related or medically‑guided treatment. Exact cover depends on your insurer and plan, so it’s best to check directly with them first. If you do have cover, I can provide a receipt or invoice for your claim

How do I book?

You can book online through the treatment options on this website, or request a free phone consultation. Whether you live locally or are visiting The Retreat, you can choose the option that fits your needs.

Do you offer a free phone consultation?

Yes. The free phone consultation is a helpful first step if you want to talk about your symptoms or check whether acupuncture or bodywork is suitable for you. It also helps decide which treatment may be best.
